Since I moved to Spanish speaking Peru I’ve been thinking a lot about language. I’ve found it fascinating how it’s shapes, sounds and meanings can both alienate and connect us. My membership to a local poetry group has been particularly provoking as it’s demonstrated that poetry (and the shape it takes depending on the language its formed by) can hold beauty and meaning even when misunderstood. So in order to celebrate my homeland’s National poetry day, I’ve attempted a haiku that connects three nations through words and form. However, written at the end of a 12 hour day (typical to Peru), it is not remotely world shaking but instead demonstrative of the consequent mind set.
